How solar energy works

Solar energy works by harnessing the power of sunlight and converting it into usable forms of energy. The two main technologies used to capture solar energy are photovoltaic (PV) systems and solar thermal systems. Photovoltaic systems consist of solar panels made up of multiple solar cells that contain semiconductors. When sunlight hits these cells, it excites electrons, generating an electric current. This direct current (DC) is then converted into alternating current (AC) through an inverter, making it suitable for powering homes, businesses, and electrical grids. Solar thermal systems, on the other hand, use mirrors or lenses to concentrate sunlight onto a receiver, which then heats a fluid to produce steam.
